Exhibition CAAM - Los Balcones 11. Planta 3
Paco Guillén Ruido en blanco
Since 26 October 2012 to 10 February 2013
Thinking about drawing as a tool for ordering his universe, a tool that manifests itself as dissident, irreverent and diaphanous, is what the Canarian artist Paco Guillén is presenting in his work.
With a broad and expansive concept of the language of drawing, Guillén creates works that receive and return influences from cartoons, the urban calligraphy of graffiti, video-animation and installation, revealing to us a critical view of his society in which the universe of current art is called into question. And he revisits it with an uncommon acidity, charged with sarcasm, fine irony and a kind of graphic rusticity that appeals to immediacy, the speed of ideas, the germinal freshness of the mark that nearly tears the paper, scraping into it, creating a dark noise that traverses the colourless -virginal white, now blackened- field of the surface his action supports.
With a rudimentary attitude, (excessively artisanal but not "hedonistically" so or "mannerist" in any way) that some critics -or trained viewers- might even consider "outsider" (out of orbit) that re-situates drawing inside the margins of artistic dignification and within the manners that are the alternatives to the uptight elegance of bucolic aesthetics, as a real shift from its domineering, rancidly noble aesthetic, Guillén makes drawing corrosively fun with his sharp, reflexive charisma and the nobility of its ugliness. Perhaps it is the same ugliness that in reality abounds like the wind in these times when distrust and discontent is the spirit that overshadows our existences, and where violence, abandonment, indolence, apathy and anti-social behaviour have displaced tolerance, harmony and right-doing in the existence of Western man.
That being the case, White Noise intends to be a reflection which unmasks our ugliness, while it reveals the secrets of a man who questions the certainty of things that are being blurred out of our well-being.
This project, which is Paco Guillén's first solo show in a European museum, has been conceived and created entirely for the CAAM exhibition space as a project that brings together all the ideo-aesthetic paths the artist normally travels down, such as drawing and video-animation, and includes three pieces created exclusively for this show: Ruido Blanco (White Noise), Bandera (Flag) and La carta que no (The Letter That Doesn't) all from 2011-2012. In addition to an uncomfortable and belligerent installation that attacks the silent comfort of our mild and unchallenging lives.
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain in 1974, Paco Guillén has studied at the Universities of Cuenca and La Laguna de Santa Cruz de Tenerife and has shown his work in countries such as Italy, Germany, Spain and Mexico, among others.
