Davinia Jiménez Todo lo mío es tuyo
Since 26 October 2012 to 10 February 2013
In the 21st century, our vision has been inoculated by the iconographic saturation caused by the media bombardment of images generated by mass media, meaning images that come from (paper) print media, advertising, posters or ones broadcast over and over on television or from the world of film, in addition to the ones generated photographically by the focused gaze of the lens that subsequently open up and travel vectorially, tangentially, and unstoppably in a never ending deluge from and through the flat screen of the computer and the internet and the touch screens of smartphones.
We have been "vaccinated" (metaphorically speaking, for the most part) to the meanings of the banalization of the image, which is now carnivalesque, ephemeral, fast and ferocious and has turned into a kind of steady vroom vroom, like a long succession, whisper or background noise: a Te Deum, a tedium.
Using the most expansive, multidisciplinary and promiscuous drawing, the work of the young Canarian artist Davinia Jiménez is an investigation into how to cohabit and react -detoxify ourselves- from and against the tedium that is poisoning us and blocks our capacity for observation, for reading our mediatised reality. At the incestuous edge that Umberto Eco defined in Apocalypse Postponed as behavioural choices in the face of mass culture, her work skips back and forth between the reinterpretation and consumption of images.
With her choice of drawing as the best linguistic system of visuality for dismantling the solemnity of the materiality of the contemporary work of art, Davinia delves into this tangle of images, mixing them up, combining them and undoing them while she re-does them with her drawing, her sfumato, grisaille and her levelling dirtiness that flattens the hierarchical importance of their documentary-signic value. At the same time, she turns the images into a theatre fly system, backdrop or background where the viewer feels covered, embraced, wrapped or overlapped by this artistic presence that encages their perception (and their thought) caught in an instant, which is the instant when art reminds you that it is the mirror of ourselves and openly declares to you that EVERYTHING MINE IS YOURS... and vice-versa.
Davinia Jiménez Gopar was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1982 and educated at the Universidad de la Laguna de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. She has won numerous prizes and grants, some of the most important of which are the Creación Artística and Sesión de Estudio, del Centro de Arte La Regenta, awarded by the Vice-Chancellor for Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands. She has exhibited her work in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Bilbao (Spain), San Potito (Italy) and New Jersey (USA), just to name a few of the high points of her bright and promising career.
