Exhibition CAAM - Los Balcones 11. Planta 2
Tribute to Clara Muñoz
Since 27 October 2016 to 8 January 2017
The Atlantic Centre of Modern Art (CAAM) is paying tribute to art critic and exhibition curator Clara Muñoz with the group exhibition Homenaje a Clara Muñoz (Tribute to Clara Muñoz) and the publishing of a book with a selection of key texts by this major art specialist written in the last 20 years.
The untimely death of exhibition curator and art critic Clara Muñoz in December 2015 left a void in the Canary Islands contemporary art scene that will not be easy to fill. Her work in critical mediation and visibility has been essential for a large group of artists since the early 1990s.
Clara Muñoz spent more than 20 years working as a critic, constantly in touch with various generations of artists whose spaces of action have travelled the most diverse territories of postconceptual art, where the horizon of dialogue and reference includes founding artists of the Spanish and international conceptual movement, such as Juan Hidalgo.
She is an inseparable part of key contemporary critical thinking in the Canary Islands of the early 21st century. Her legacy comprises not only a vast number of exhibitions and exhibition projects in continuous contact with the creators, but also a significant historiographic heritage. This is seen in her work as an art critic in the written media and her essays in numerous project catalogues, as well as her critical analyses, including her contributions to the CAAM publication, Atlántica Magazine.
Homenaje a Clara Muñoz includes works in a variety of formats by selected artists who were close to her. With the mediation of Juan Espino, Jose Ruiz and the CAAM, they have chosen a series of works that pay tribute to her, both individually and combined.
Artists participating with works in this project are: Adrián Alemán, Teresa Arozena, Juan Carlos Batista, Karina Beltrán, Sergio Brito, Juan Espino Durán, Guenda Herrera, Juan Hidalgo, Hildegard Hahn, Pura Márquez, PSJM, José Ruiz and Néstor Torrens.
The CAAM would like to express its sincere gratitude to the family of Clara Muñoz and all the artists who have generously taken part in this project and made it possible.
This is our ongoing tribute to the person and the legacy of Clara Muñoz.
