15 - 18 November

FOR TEACHERS

This workshop will introduce visual thinking strategies (VTS), a way of teaching young people to use their eyes and minds to make meaning out of complex visual information—works of art. We will also discuss the implications of vts for the development of skills that are useful in schooling more generally. It is based on the work of cognitive psychologist abigail housen and veteran museum educator Philip Yenawine.

Abigail housen has been investigating the nature of aesthetic Development and its role in education for over twenty years. Philip Yenawine (who will conduct the workshop) has directed education Programs at many museums, including new york’s metropolitan museum Of art and museum of modern art, and chicago’s museum of contemporary Art.

VTS has been tested in many sites, and is the basis for a growing number Of museum programs in the us and abroad as well as a complete k-5 Curriculum for elementary schools.

As a curriculum, VTS encourages:
A personal connection to art from diverse cultures, times and places.
Confidence in one’s ability to construct meaning from art.
Active class discussion and group problem solving.
Development of thinking and communication skills.
Transfer of these skills to other subject areas.
