CONFERENCE

8.1 Distortions. Documents. Nothings and Tale.

Art centres and local communities: management models and collaboration practices in the State environment.
12th and 13th March, 2008

8.1 distorsiones, documentos, naderías y relatos

Since the second half of the 1960s, a network of museums and contemporary art centres has been developed in Spain following models which, in the older cases –such as the Reina Sofía National Art Centre Museum or the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno itself– are in need of a review and update process. Furthermore, as a result of the development of civil society in the art field, which has taken place in recent years in the creations of different artists, gallery owners, critics and directors’ associations, etc., there has been a need to change the framework relating political power and museums, establishing the bases for action according to a good practices document. In other words, changes are occurring which could be substantial in the internal operation of these art institutions, in turn providing the possibility of making changes in their management, applying other models which facilitate dynamic operations. At the same time, the contemporary art museum map in Spain, still not complete, needs to establish some flexible collaborative practices models to help to attain common objectives. On this occasion, we shall attempt to share, reflect and discuss not only management models and collaborative practices between different institutions and authorities but also the application of the “Good Practices Document” with some of the people directly involved in these changes in the State environment by means of two round tables.

Also, two conferences will contemplate, referring to specific cases, the relations between museums and contemporary art centres with local communities, defined both as artistic communities and the different audiences involved in the construction of their reality.
