In/Out: a possible map of contemporary artistic production in Gran Canaria

Since 17 December 2020 to 7 March 2021

This exhibition outlines a possible route through contemporary artistic production in Gran Canaria. It pays particular attention to the current unsettling political, social, cultural and economic situation through the gaze of various artists who, over the last five years, have developed their work both inside and outside the island. Furthermore, In/Out takes a look at the generations of artists who started out around the time of two great collapses—the Berlin Wall and the Twin Towers—and were then hit badly by the crisis of 2008 and are now being rocked by the events of 2020 which have once again curtailed their professional aspirations.

Over this period, the consolidation of neoliberalism and the implementation of globalization processes have radically transformed economic and socio-political structures, in turn leading to a situation of generalized instability that conditions not just ways of life, but also artistic production and the position of artists inside and outside the productive system and cultural institutions. Considering the imperative to delve deeper into this issue while at once lending greater visibility to these generations, they a series of question arises, ranging from the individual to the collective, that will open a necessary space for reflection and at the same time acknowledge the potential of contemporary artistic creation to arouse our imagination inside and outside the museum.

Here we unfold a possible map of singularities and collective dialogues which, from a critical gaze, will hazard a diagnosis of the present and what affects us (ground floor); an overhaul of the structures that govern society and the art institution and, when expanded into the public space, also condition our very behaviour (floor -1); to conclude by proposing potential strategies for the future that will enable us to imagine and recover the meaning of possibility (San Antonio Abad). As such, the intention of this mapping is to reveal some of the contradictions of a world threatened by environmental crisis, economic uncertainty and social inequality, and to activate our capacity to imagine other futures.
